Callista Raylour is a women’s Christian fiction author who writes stories because God told her to. She’s the kind of person who saves every thank-you card she’s ever received (yes, all of them), finds comfort in organizing things that really don’t need to be organized, and obsesses about the tidiness of her kitchen counter. When she’s not writing stories of grace, you’ll find her walking her Aussie Doodle, sitting in the bleachers at a small town ball game, or hiking in the wilderness. (OK, fine, she’s also obsessing about the lack of organization in any given room of her Southwest Missouri home). Whatever it may be, you can count on Callista to be the witty perfectionist who brings the same attention to detail to her writing that she brings to everything else in life.
Writing was more God’s plan than Callista’s. As a young girl, she was always reading and eventually, writing stories for her family. Armed with a typewriter she received at her eighth Christmas, she typed those stories up and forced her family to read them, whether they wanted to or not.
Although writing was on her heart at an early age, like many of God’s plans, it came with His timing. Throughout a career in education, God kept nudging her toward writing. She kept saying no. It seemed too big, too hard, too impossible for someone who was already juggling so much.
Finally, a message in her daily devotional pushed her forward to accept God’s calling. “The thing that feels too big, too hard, or too crazy might be God calling you.” Callista had given all three of these excuses, but it was the next line that changed everything: “Stop shrinking to fit spaces you’ve outgrown” (C4 Ministries 4 Women, 2025). For years, she had been shrinking, playing it safe, going through the motions, telling herself that she was meant to do something simple. Something that wouldn’t require so much time, resources, or craziness. Now, God had called her to do something bigger, and she answered.
The irony of it all is that at the time she answered the call, she discovered that writing was her lifeline. During a season of struggle, writing and journaling became her therapy, the way to process the things that were too difficult to speak aloud. As a result, she drafted her first novel more for herself than for an audience. Regardless, that first draft taught her that when God provides the assignment, He provides the time, the resources, and the strength to finish it. What started as therapy turned into service. She learned that God doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.
Today, Callista writes women’s Christian fiction that explores how God can redeem even the darkest moments. Her stories are for women who feel stuck, challenged by life’s circumstances, and need to know they’re not alone. She writes with wit and honesty, and doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff because she knows that God often uses it for His best work. Her characters are authentic, but they’re not perfect. They face real challenges with the opportunity for God to turn brokenness into bravery.
